About Kevin Wilk, PT, DPT:
Kevin E. Wilk served as President of the Sports Section of the APTA from 2007 to 2010 and has trained more than 4,000 professionals through hands-on seminars and spoken to tens of thousands at more than 750 events worldwide.

For the past 30 years, Dr. Wilk has been an active physical therapist, researcher, and educator. Kevin is currently Associate Clinical Director for Champion Sports Medicine (a Physiotherapy Facility) in Birmingham, AL.

In addition, he is the Director of Rehabilitative Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham and is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Kevin is also the Rehabilitation Consultant for the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball Team.  Dr. Wilk received his physical therapy from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL and his DPT from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of HealthCare Professions in Boston, MA.

Requirements:

This course is 50% hands-on so come dressed to learn. You will need to bring:

  • Lab clothing:
    • Tank top or halter top to expose the shoulder
    • Shorts to expose the knee

    Upon successful completion of this seminar, the practitioner will learn how to:

    • Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy & biomechanics of the shoulder complex
    • Recognize capsular restrictions of the Glenohumeral joint
    • Perform specific clinical exam special tests, joint assessment techniques & performance tests
    • Design an effective and appropriate evidence-based rehabilitation program for various shoulder dysfunctions:
      • Bankart repairs, Laterjet procedures, superior capsular repair
      • Rotator cuff repair
        • SLAP repairs
        • Motor control deficits
        • Biceps Pain
        • Scapular dyskinesis
        • Adhesive Capsulitis
        • Acromioclavicular joint dysfunction
        • Overhead athlete
        • Specific injuries to the female overhead athlete
    • Analyze specific exercise techniques and evaluate the exercises effectiveness
    • Integrate the information presented and formulate a treatment plan for specific case studies which will be presented. 

    Behavioral Objectives

    1 Day - Shoulder -

    1. By the end of the course the participant will explain the definitions of laxity and instability for a patient undergoing an initial shoulder evaluation.
    2. By the end of the course, given the findings of a post-surgery evaluation of a female athlete following rotator cuff repair, the participant will explain 4 specific risk factors associated with the risk of developing stiffness.
    3. By the end of the course, the participant, using evidence-based data for a patient recovering from RC repair, will discuss two rationales of an individualized, gradual, progressive rehab program.
    4. By the end of the course, given a patient following rotator cuff repair, will design a protocol using five advanced strengthening phase exercises.
    5. By the end of the course, for a patient with a diagnosis of Adhesive Capsulitis (frozen shoulder) will develop a comprehensive protocol for rehabilitation.
    6. By the end of the course, for a patient with a suspected SLAP lesion showing high specificity and sensitivity, integrate three tests for evaluation.
    7. By completion of the course, for a non-operative overhead throwing athlete with osteophyte, the participant will be able to design a rehabilitation using 4 components discussed in the course.
